Accounting Clerk Jobs

The Accounting Clerk jobs are the most basic building block of any accounting department.  The clerks are the people performing the day to day work of the accounting department.  As an accounting clear, you may post or verify financial data,  This includes checking and sorting of invoices or checks.

Usually Accounting clerks start in a specialized department, such as accounts-payable or accounts-receivable positions.  Clerks may also be working with basic accounting software packages and other basic duties such as reconciling bank statements.

Education Requirements:

Generally an Accounting Clerk position only requires a high school education.  An Associate's Degree in Accounting is considered desirable and generally required if you wish to move up into a higher position. 

Employment Outlook:

According to the Department of Labor, there were about 2 million Accounting Clerk jobs in the US, spanning every industry.  There is also a large need for part-time and temporary Accounting Clerk positions

Small Company Accounting Clerk:

In smaller companies, the Accounting Clerk can work with income and expenses or even keep the books.  As a clerk with a smaller company you may be working with a specific task or you might be running the numbers for the entire company.  It simply depends on the company.

Large Company Accounting Clerk:

In larger comapnies, the Accounting Clerk is almost always working on a specific job task, within a specific department.  These departments could be as varied as payroll or accounts-payable or accounts-receivable.  Other responsibities that Accounting clerks may have is checking the accuracy of paperwork or accounts or checking on documents for the department.
