Degree Jobs
Requirements for becoming an Accountant depend on two things. First where you live and second, what level you want to be an accountant. The two most popular tests are the CMA or Certified Management Accounting Test and the CPA or the Certified Public Accounting Test.

Usually at least a bachelor’s degree in accounting is required. A master’s degree, experience in the field or both will generally be considered helpful to passing either test. Also different states have different requirements for hours required.

The Wall Street Recruiter's: Ultimate Job Guide has already done the research to find the specifics for your location.  It's all already in there!
Certifications

Accounting certifications usually refer to programs that are not college degrees, rather they are seen in the accounting field as additional training accountants can take to increase their specialties.

Some of these certifications include: Certified Public Accountants (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Bank Auditor (CBA), Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP), Certified Forensic Accountant (Cr.FA), Forensic Certified Public Accountant (FCPA), Certified Quality Auditor (CQA), and Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA)

Accreditations
Similar to accounting certifications, accountants can also receive accreditations depending on their specific field of specialty.

Some of these include: Accredited Financial Examiner (ATE), Accredited Tax Preparer (ATP), Accredited Tax Advisor (ATA), Fundamental Payroll Certificate (FPC) and the Certified Financial Services Auditor (CFSA)
Accountant or CPA
There is absolutely a difference between an accountant and a CPA. CPA’s are generally considered one of the top advisors a business owner or manager can have. CPA’s have passed business courses in accounting; they’ve also passed the CPA exam.

This exam is now considered even harder than the Bar exam which lawyers take to practice law. CPA’s are also required to follow a code of ethics and complete continuing education to maintain their status.
